How Do I Shorten Eight Joists Under An Existing Wood Deck So That They Are Even With Each Other?
I need to install a slightly bigger hot tub into my deck. I need to widen the opening and re-support the surface boards. So that means cutting the surface boards back to the proper size, removing the end "face" joist, undercutting all of the supporting joists by 1-1/2 inches and installing a new face. Any ideas on how to under or back cut the joists with the surface boards in place so the joists are all even with each other (and perfectly square to the surface boards of course)?

Interesting question — but not really enough detail - a photo would be helpful.
Cutting decking and joists is pretty straightforward - you can use a circular saw, or reciprocating saw for most cuts. Worst case scenario, they can be removed to be cut with other tools, like a powered miter saw, or tablesaw, or even a router.
You need to think this through — installing a larger hot tub, means more weight - it may actually be necessary to restructure the deck, as opposed to just cutting a larger hole. You should also check to see if you need a permit for this.
If you are purchasing a new hot tub - you may just want to make the store install it for you, as part of the package - then it’s up to them to get it right - tho I’d still check on the permit, myself.

It would be much easier if you just removed an extra surface board to allow you to cut the joist with a circular saw. If you can’t do that, then You’ll have to mark the cut and do it with a reciprocating saw. this is a bit tricky to do and get a nice straight cut, but can be done with a bit of skill.
